PMP9766: High Efficiency

Part Number: PMP9766
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS63020

Hi,

In the document of PMP9766, http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slva726/slva726.pdf it says that it is "Small and high efficiency single converter solution" in section 6 Conclusion.

I'd like to know why it is high efficiency? How much is the efficiency?

Thanks&Best Regards,

Wenxiu

  • Hi Wenxiu,

This approach has high efficiency since the supercapacitor is charged and discharged using a switch-mode converter. In forward mode, the TPS63020 efficiency depends on the operating conditions (input/output voltage and output current, please see the datasheet), and is typically >90%. For the reverse mode the efficiency was not characterized, but since the converter still operates in switch mode it should be similar. Therefore, the charge-discharge efficiency should be around 80%.

    Best regards,
    Milos
