WL1807MOD: Linux Kernel supported version of WiLink8

Hi team,

According to the release notes(https://software-dl.ti.com/ecs/WiLink8/R8_8/release_notes_R8_8.html) WiLink8 seems to support Linux kernel 4.19.38, but does it support Linux kernel version5.4.56 or higher version?

Customer considers WL1807MOD and is concerned about that.

Hi Yuto,

WiLink 8 does work with kernels later than 4.19, however the support is limited. The linux kernel community has taken it upon themselves to support the device in the kernel. However, we still support the wl18xx firmware. For example, we have WL1837 on the TI Sitara AM62 and AM64 Starter kits, and those operate with kernel 5.10.

That being said, 4.19 is the kernel version that officially supports for wilink8. This is because we have additional software and development that we provide separate. You can read this R8.8 guide for more information: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru561a/swru561a.pdf

If this is a new project, and your customer only needs Wi-Fi capabilities, I would suggest looking at CC3300 or CC3301: https://www.ti.com/product/CC3300
