CC3200: Custom CC3200 board is not flashing using FTDI cable

Hello all,

I am trying to format and flash my custom CC3200 board using FTDI cable.

I populate the following pins useful for flash programming using UNIFLASH tool

1. nReset

2. SOP2

3. TX

4. RX

And following this procedure while formatting

1. Pull down reset button.

2. Continuous pull up SOP2 pin

I am using serial flash of 16 MB and during formatting, i am getting this error.

Ya i am able to execute "Get Version" command and its output is :-

Hi,

OK, it looks that you have problem with your serial flash chip (manufacturing or design problem of your board, selected wrong flash chip type, etc.).

Hi Kobi,

Ya i tried those steos mentioned in the link after your suggestion, but those steps are not supporting my FTDI cable as these steps are for FTDI FT2232D EEPROM and my FTDI cable has FT232R.

Hi Jan,

May be it is the possible problem you mentioned because we have selected some other vendors (microchip) serial flash but it supported all the commands mentioned at Serial flash guide.
Will it cause problem?

Hi Shubham,

I am almost sure that your communication via FT232R is correct, cause you are able execute "Get Version" command. In this case it can be most likely problem with sFlash.

Hard to say, but if flash was not tested by TI with device, it can cause some problems.

Now I just guess ... some types of flash chip have as default selected software write protection. This type of flash chip cannot use CC3200 and Uniflash.

Yaa, now i am sure communication is correct.

Hmm, need to check with TI tested sflash.

I am using this SST25VF016B-50-4I-S2AF sFlash from microchip.

After seeing the data sheet of Ti sFlash W25Q80BLSNIG (winbond) and my sFlash i found one difference is that, my sFlash uses One byte read and Ti sFlash uses page-byte read

Does it makes any difference?

Hi Shubham,

It looks that your memory is not compatible due to default block protection. From datasheet SST25VF016B (page 7):

Block Protection (BP3,BP2, BP1, BP0)
The Block-Protection (BP3, BP2, BP1, BP0) bits define the size of the memory area, as defined in Table 4, to be software protected against any memory Write (Program or Erase) operation. The Write-Status Register (WRSR) instruction is used to program the BP3, BP2, BP1 and BP0 bits as long as WP# is high or the Block-Protect-Lock (BPL) bit is 0. Chip-Erase can only be executed if Block- Protection bits are all 0. After power-up, BP3, BP2, BP1 and BP0 are set to 1.

2. Default at power-up for BP2, BP1, and BP0 is ‘111’. (All Blocks Protected)

Hi Jan,

Ya it is correct as you said but before write it sends WREN command to write, which enables the write to the sFlash

Hi Shubham,

WREN command is not related to block protection (see datasheet). To change block protection you need to use WRSR command. This command is not supported by CC3200.

Hi Jan,

I changed the sFlash to the TI suggested one, now i am able to format and flash the code.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Now, i am facing one more problem with debugging it is showing this error:

Cortex_M4_0: Error connecting to the target: Unable to communicate with the device. Please check your connection.

Can you please help me regarding this?

Hi Shubham,

Please share schematic how do you have connected your debug probe and SOP configuration. What debugger do you use?

At first check that you have:
- not exchanged TDI and TDO line
- connected TDI, TDO, TCK, TMS, GND to your debug probe
- set proper SOP configuration (JTAG/SWD)
- select proper target configuration file for CC3200 in your IDE

Hi Jan,

I have attached 3 files:-

1. SS of JTAG connections, i have doubt that TDO and TDI pins of JTAG are shared with my LED1 & LED2 connections.

2. My Sch. of controller

3. My sch. of the other connections like SOP2 etc.

Hi,

Sorry I don't undestnad.

- Do you want to use SWD instead 4-wire JTAG?
- How do you have selected SOP configuration? It is set to SWD?
- What IDE do you use? What debug probe do you use?
- Do you have set target configuration in IDE to CC3200 SWD?

Hi Jan,

1. I want to use 4-wire JTAG
2. While flashing my SOP2 pin is high.
3. CCS IDE i am using and i am using FTDI cable
4. No i set for JTAG

Hi,

With this cable you will not be able debug from CCS.

If you need debug from CCS you need to have debug probe connected to JTAG/SWD lines of CC3200 (TDI, TDO, TMS, TCK, GND). As debug probe you can use CC3200 LaunchPad of other LaunchPad(s) which have integrated debug prode XDS-100 or XDS-110. CC3200 LaunchPad have integrated XDS-100 which is based on FT2232D chip.

Definitely not via this cable. Maybe you have also connected USB cable from LP into your computer.
