INA168: Is this part is the only one which can handle 400VDC current sense or is there any part which can handle more upto 1500VDC

Part Number: INA168
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA138, INA139, INA169, ISOW7842, INA260

I have a requirement of sensing 1500V DC high side current up to 25Amp. Is there any part available to handle this high voltage and current? Upto now I have come across INA168 which can handle 400V DC but not higher than 400V DC. Can anyone suggest how or which part number can be use to measure current up to 25 Amp on a maximum of 1500V DC power line.

  • Hello Nabeen,

Thank you for considering to use Texas Instruments in your design. I would like to clarify, that the INA168 can only handle a 400V common mode if it is configured with a suitable zener diode reverse biased across the supply to its ground pin to ensure that its recommended operating conditions are not exceeded such as in the following application note (http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slla190/slla190.pdf).  There are actually a few other devices with similar architectures that could also be configured for that common mode voltage with a proper zener diode.  These include the INA138, INA139, and INA169.  If you follow the guidelines outlined in the above application note, you should be able to design for higher than 400V.  Aside from the method alluded to above, we have a couple of TI-designs that may help you with designing a solution.  These designs measure current off of large bus voltage supplies and with proper adjustments could probably be tailored to a 1500V bus.  These include the http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tidudp5/tidudp5.pdfhttp://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tidu849/tidu849.pdf, and http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau521/slau521.pdf.

  • Dear Mr. Simmons,

    Greetings from CORE TIME SOLUTION.

I have attached my project block diagram along with this mail. Let me know, how and which section you can support with your part and please provide me the part number so that I could study its feasibility. If you can connect me with your local dealer it would be great.

  • Hello Nabeen,

If I understand correctly, your desired current sensing implementation is like the figure below.  I think the INA260 paired with ISOW7842 will help you achieve what you want.  The configuration is detailed in the following application notes.  One of these notes is specifically for a solar combiner box.

      http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tidudm5/tidudm5.pdf and http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tidudp5/tidudp5.pdf

In these application notes, the INA260 is powered with an isolated supply generated from the ISOW7842, thereby allowing it to be put in a high voltage high side configuration.  Look through these notes and let me know if you need further clarification.
