I have an application where I am using an LM339NE4 comparator to drive automotive relay coils down the line from the comparator output pin. I have had a few of the comparators fail, and I believe it is from voltage spikes caused by the relay coils de-energizing. I did measure peak voltage spikes of +50V and -50V on the comparator output pin during the relay de-energizing. After putting transzorbs and resistors in the circuit to reduce the voltage spikes, I still measure peaks at +15V and -15V on the comparator output pin.
Therefore, I need to know the voltage ratings of the comparator output pins. The data sheets says a max of 36V but does not give a min, so is it safe to assume this is +/- 36 V rating?
Thank you.
