SM65MLVD205AD vs ADN4695E

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65MLVD205A

I have a design based on the AD part and I am trying to replace it with the SM65MLVD205AD.

One issue that has been raised during a peer review was the ESD ratings. The AD part states 15kV HBM and 8kV Contact (absolute maximum). The TI part only states "Bus Pin ESD Protection Exceeds 8 kV". Is it HBM?

The second question related to the first one is what I should do to guarantee the replacement (if done) does not compromise the robustness of the design.

  • Hi Elder,

Yes, the 8kV rating is HBM. I will have to check with some of my colleagues for a contact discharge value as I do not see it in the data sheet and am not sure if they specified this during the parts characterization.

To help protect the SN65MLVD205A against ESD strikes transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes and series power resistors, amongst other things, can be implemented to absorb the ESD strikes protecting the IC. Here is an application note that does a good job at explaining ESD and protection schemes: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slla292a/slla292a.pdf

You should talk with your local TI account manager about your needs and how TI can help solve your design challenges. Could you please send me an email offline so that we can discuss your application in more detail as well as help you get in contact with your local TI person. You can reach me at mpeffers@ti.com

  • Hello Michael.

I will send you an e-mail with more details on the application.

    Thank you.

    Elder.
