MAX3223: Can we connect 2 UARTs of a processor to MAX3223 ?

Hi I am using MAX3223 device in my design. And I have 2 PHYTEC processors in my overall system [ 2 mother boards].

I need to have 2 separate UART/RS232 connectors for getting system logs, one per PHYTEC.

So i need to have UART to RS232 line drivers in my design.

Since MAX3223 is a dual channel line driver can i connect 2 separate UART ports to MAX3223 device and take 2 separate RS232 signals and provide to RS232 connector?

With the RTS and CTS in picture (with flow control in picture) only one fully functional UART/RS232 translation can be achieved with MAX3223 device and since I am not using RTS and CTS, I am thinking to use 2 separate UARTS with MAX3223 chip. Need advise on this.

Hi Chethan,

Yes, it is OK to use a single transceiver chip to interface with multiple ports/UARTs. Note that the auto power down feature will only activate when both inputs are invalid, though - it does not occur on a per-channel basis.

I noticed you drew the diagram to show UART#1 having two output ports only and UART#2 as having two input ports only. Is this correct? I would have expected each port to be bidirectional (1 TX / 1 RX).
