INA229: Measure an alternating current

Part Number: INA229

Hi Team,

My customer have a question. Please see details below.
"Regarding INA229, I want to measure an alternating current through a circuit.
My Voltage range is 0-36V AC having frequency of 13Hz. A 36V AC signal drives a inductive coil with a maximum current of 1A.
Can i use INA229 for measuring current through this inductive load? if INA229 is not possible, please suggest an option"

I hope you can help.

Thank you so much.

Gerald

  • Gerald,

The INA229 should work but you need to make sure the inputs common mode voltage does not go below GND of the INA229.  Since there is a slow signal and AC I do not see transients that could cause and issue where the inductor voltage could go below GND.  The only time I see there could be an issue is during start up and the spikes in voltage at that point.  If needed you could add some Shockley diode to prevent the inputs below GND during any spikes but this would need to be verified the exact conditions required.
