THS4211: supply abs max protection

Part Number: THS4211

Team,

One of our designs is using the THS4211DGM.  There is a circumstance where the V+ input can be driven at +2.0V while the supply rails (VS+/VS-) are powered off (0V).  I see this violates the absolute max rating for input voltage in the datasheet.

We have a 30.9 Ohm resistor in series with the V+ input.  Is that enough resistance in line to avoid any damage?

  • Hi Michael,

It goes without saying that for almost all devices, it is always recommended to power on the devices before applying a signal at the inputs.

That being said, what the data sheet does not mention, is that the abs max for the input current for these devices is 10 mA. So in your case, the 30 Ohm resistor in series with the input will not be enough to prevent potentially irreversible damage. I would recommend increasing the resistance value as much as possible, and maybe also adding diodes with lower forward drops than 0.6-0.7V from the inputs of the amplifier to each of the power supply rails, as external ESD/EOS prevention.

I hope this helps to answer your inquiry. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    Regards,
    Vladimir
