AMC1302: Is it safe to use AMC1302 in a 1500V inverter system?

Dear TI,

I am going to buid an inverter prototype with 1500V DC-link voltage. The output voltage is 690V (L-L rms). I am wondering if AMC1302 can be used to measure the current or voltage in this situation? I see in the datasheet that the maximum isolation working voltage is only 1500V rms or 2121 peak DC.

Any suggestion for this issue?

Hi Jiaxing Lei,

You should probably look into the safety standards for the end equipment type that your inverter will be used for. Generally speaking, at 690V the creepage and clearance requirements exceed the ~8.5mm spacing associated with the AMC1302. Let us know what the minimum creepage/clearance distance is required for your end equipment and we can go from there.

Thanks for your reply. This inverter is used in a speical equipment with good airtight. The secondry control is isolated with optical fiber. Therefore, this inverter will be possibly not touched by humankind. In this situation, is it possible to use this IC?

By the way, does this mean AMC1302 cannot be used in a general inverter system with 1500V DC-link, such as the PV inverter?

Hi Jiaxing,

Safety is a relative term here as it pertains to the requirements of the end system. As far as the AMC1302 goes, the device working voltage looks like it meets your needs, assuming 8mm spacing is appropriate in your system. You can also refer to Figure 4 - higher working voltage are possible, with a somewhat reduced expected lifetime of the isolation capacitor.
