INA260: INA260 query

Part Number: INA260
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA237, INA238, INA228

Hello,

We are using in our application board INA260 with GMR sensor for contactless current sensing.

We are trying to sense current increment in steps of 1mA/ 5mA and hence we have added 2 very different methods.

We would appreciate if you kindly review snapshot of the layout to help us understand if you see any impact or if we can further improve resolution

Kindly provide your feedback

thanks,

R Bhagat

  • Hi Bhagat,

could you post the schematics? It's hard to answer only with the layout snippets.

  • Hi R Bhagat,

INA260 has an LSB size of 1.25mV, it limits your system resolution. Noise will also be a factor, this plot from the datasheet illustrates noise versus sampling time:

If more flexibility is needed in determining accuracy and resolution, a discrete solution of “shunt + current sensor” is probably the right way to go. Then you may choose a larger shunt, which is particularly important if load current is small. For current sensor, I would look into the INA237, INA238 or INA228.

  • Hello Guang,

We do not want to use the approach of shunt resistor (external) to device from security perspective. Considering INA260 what would be the best case and worst case current accuracy we can get at ambient. Additionally, based on our current application we can use higher conversion time hence we would like to understand on same

Kindly do let us know since at this stage moving to INA228 will be difficult.

    Thanks & Regards,

  • Hi Roma,

We have an online calculator located here. You’re welcome to use it to estimate measurement accuracy. In below example, I defined the current range between 0.5A and 5A:
