LM239A-EP: Current consumption

It has been mentioned in the datasheet the total supply current requirement for whole IC is 2 mA. However, the specification for low-level output current (which is 16 mA typical) is not mentioned clearly that whether it is for single comparator or whole IC.

Kindly clarify for the same.

  • The supply current is defined as the current that flows into VCC and out of GND. The output current does not flow into VCC, so it is not included in the supply current.

    The output current is measured per pin. (If there were a total limit, it would be specified as the GND pin limit.)

    Each output can sink up to 20mA. See Abs Max table, "Output Current line.

    But we recommend keeping the sinking current below 8mA to avoid the current limit and reasonable VOL voltages. See the "Output Saturation Voltage" graph on page 5.
