OPA2670: PLC Line Driver

Part Number: OPA2670
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THS6222, THS6301, THS6302, THS6212, OPA2675, OPA2673

Hi Team,

I am choosing alternative of MSEX24-i(Single Port, GreenPHY Differential Line Driver), below is detail description:

I don't know which spec is most important when choose alternative. I find OPA2670 in TI PLC Line Driver portfolio.

Could you kindly help me to confirm this and give some suggestions about this kind device alternative selection?

Thanks

  • Well Kian, almost impossible to say, that other part looks like it has internal resistors to just do a fixed non-inverting gain stage, that is almost never done in PLC where most board level solutions do something like this - this cross coupled feedback implements an active output match reducing the insertion loss to the line while retaining match. I would be surprised if anyone is really using that other part in a reference design - looks pretty primitive.

  • Hello Kian,

TI has several different parts in our line driving portfolio which can be used in such an application.  I recommend taking a look at the THS6222 and THS6301/THS6302 parts to start.

Also, if you would like, could you share additional specifications of the MSEX24-i you would like the TI part to match or beat?  You could also share any information you wish over email; you can find me easily in TI Directory.

The more I know about the MSEX24-i and your design needs, the more accurately I can propose a part from our portfolio.

  • Hi Alec,

That's fine ,we can discuss under this thread. If there is a privacy content, I will share with you over email.

For now, I believe MSEX24-i is used with MSE1021 and acting as a 5V 500mA line driver.  I want to know if we have a device with similar specs so that I can find a window to beat MSEX24-i.

I recommend taking a look at the THS6222 and THS6301/THS6302 parts to start.

Thanks for recommending THS6222 and THS6301, I will learn about this.

  • Hi Michael,

I can barely understand this. This is my first time with line driver application. I don't know how to design and choose right device. So could you kindly share some documentation to me? I want to learn about this.

    Thanks

  • Hello Kian,

I believe the THS6212 & THS6222 are a great first part family to look at for your design.  Please also note the OPA2673 & OPA2675 as other viable part options for PLC.  The THS6301/2 are a bit older but also viable.  I would prioritized communicating the THS6212/22 & OPA2673/75 and seeing how those parts could design-in.

I believe Michael is commenting on the MSEX224-i and its unique approach to PLC line driving applications from an architecture perspective.  I will leave it to Michael to comment more for clarity or continued conversation.

  • Alec, he does mention they think they want a 5V driver - not sure there is any effective one like that The THS6212 is min 10V and most of the designs I worked on used a single 12V supply,

Not sure about the other ones you mention.

  • Hi Michael,

Good spot; in my excitement to type up my thoughts I did not check the minimum supply voltage on the older THS6212.  I will look over my recommendations and tailor them appropriately with an update.

    Hi Kian,

Keep your supply needs in mind, I may have recommended a few parts with higher power requirements than the current competitor solution.

    Alec

  • Hi Michael,

    Thanks for pointing out.

    Hi Alec,

I have checked the supply needs of this devices. OPA2675 can support 5V/500mA application. I will promote this.

    Thanks
