INA232: Looking for a Similar Part Capable of Storing Imax, Imin, and Iavg

This IC doesn't seem able to store Imax, Imin, and Iavg. Only the last value is stored in the register, if I'm understanding correctly.

Are there other similar ICs which have this capability?

  • Hi Jorge,

    INA232 can report either the last instantaneous value, or the last Iavg. The time interval over which Iavg is calculated can be programmed by setting the number of average and conversion time. However neither Imin nor Imax over such time period is stored.

    Somewhat related though, is the Alert function where a low/high threshold can be set by user. Anytime the threshold is exceeded, some flags will be set. In addition, an ALERT pin will be set if configured to do so. The Alert function is available on INA232 as well as a number of other digital power monitors.

    OK. On the INA181, the DS mentions on page 8, the IQ is 195uA typ., but on page 13, Fig. 27 IQ vs. VCM, between 2-4V, IQ is ~600uA and it is even higher at lower VCM voltages. Why isn't this clearly marked on the electrical characteristics page?

    That's a big difference in IQ!

    The electrical characteristics table normally specifies typical working conditions that are most common. It will soon become impractical if we were to include more. That’s why the typical curves are provided to cover other working conditions.

    In this case what you did is exactly correct – check the typical curves to prevent future surprises.

    I agree but an asterisk or something with a note below alerting the reader that there is more to this number. Otherwise, someone quickly looking for specs. comparison between parts can miss this and think that the performance is much better where in reality it is not.
