INA231: INA231/INA234 Vbus measurement range

Part Number: INA231
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA234, INA236

Hi,

Customer is confused if INA231/234 can support EPR Vin 28V and 36V?

Would like to clarify the Bus voltage measurement range with you.

The INA231 and INA234 spec stated they can support 28V sensing.

But in the VBUS register setting and full scale range can support up to 40.96V (INA231)/ 52.4V (INA234).

Does it mean that it also work on 28V power rail that support up to EPR 28V?

  • Hi Randy,

May I have some clarification as to what "EPR" stands for? I have not heard of this terminology before and it would help me understand your question.

    Mohamed

  • Hi Mohamed,

USB -PD 3.1 specification is extending its power capability for products >100W by providing new operating voltage profiles:
    – Standard power range (SPR): Up Up-to 20V/5A (100W)
    – Extended power range (EPR): 28V/5A ( 140W), 36V/5A (180W) 180W),and 48V/5A (240W)

    Best regards,

    Randy

  • Hi Randy,

The max Vcm that can be applied to both the INA234 and INA231 is 28V. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    Best,

    Mohamed

  • Hi Mohamed,

Customer still has questions for INA234. The recommended Vcm max is 28V as showed in the datasheet.

Why the test items below tested to 48V?

And the statement in the section 8.1.1 said "The range for the bus voltage measurement at the IN- pin is from 0 V to 52.42 V"

If so, which part you suggestion for EPR 28V and EPR 36V? Is INA236 recommended for EPR 28V and EPR 36V?

    Best regards,

    Randy

  • Hi Randy,

I see your confusion. The INA234 and the INA236 share the same characteristic plot for gain error vs. Vcm, this is why the same plot was used. However the Vcm absolute maximum is specified at 30V. Absolute max values are usually specified based on the ESD diodes, so therefore going over abs max would most likely incur issues.

    Mohamed

  • Hi Mohamed,

So which part will be suggestion when application with 28V or 36V? INA236?

Do you think that INA234 still can be used for EPR 28V? or better go with INA236?

    Best regards,

    Randy

  • Hi Randy,

As long as you don't intend on going past the absolute maximum of the INA234, then it should be fine using it for your application. If you do intend on exceeding that specification it is likely you would need a device such as the INA236. However, it is good to notice the differences between the INA234 and INA236 in terms of error and precision:
