TLV7011: what is the explanation for having a support pin

Part Number: TLV7011

Why does the TLV7011DCKR sometimes have a support pin in the package?

Thanks!

  • Hello Lenio,

The package drawings are very generic, and cover most options of the package. As the note states, the pin may, or may not, be present.

Different assembly sites may use different lead frames or die tooling. So there can be slight differences in the package depending on where it was assembled. The drawing takes these differences into account.

Looking at the current leadframe, the TLV7011 SC-70 should not have the pin, but this is no guarantee that it may have it in the future due to possible assembly site changes.

  • Any reason why the pin existed in the first place? Why is it called support? That's a question that comes directly from the customer.

  • Hello Lenio,

The packaging experts have confirmed it.

The below picture shows an example of how this “Support pin” is used as part of the overall leadframe design for a 3 pin, SOT-23 package to hold the pad where the die will be mounted. It provides stability to the leadframe during assembly.

The “Support pin” is removed during the trim and form process after the encapsulation process.

TI does consider these two variants to be interchangeable as there is no change to form, fit and functionality. With the “Support pin” trimmed close to the mold compound, it cannot be soldered to the PCB and there is no increase in a shorting risk compared to a fully populated package.
