Hello,

Could you please kindly let me know the THS3201EVM board thickness ?
Our customer refer  THS3201 EVM for their board rayout.
But , they can't find any boads size information in the datasheet and user's guide.

  • Hello Ryuji,

It would be very unlikely the board is an off size thickness.  Standard evaluation boards are 0.063" thick.  What is more important is the thickness of the dielectric under the 50 Ohm signal traces.  I do not know where to get this information. It is not in the Gerber files unless it is in the manufacturing notes.

What you will want to do is have your board fab vendor ensure that the traces of the signal lines will end up being 50 Ohms with the published geometry - they can then adjust the board stack up to make sure this happens, otherwise you may need to adjust the thickness of the signal traces to match the dielectric thickness.   This check is important because not all board materials have the exact same dielectric constant.

There is a very good chance that the spacings between all of the layers is the same on the evaluation board.

I prefer to modify the board stackup.  I like to have around 15 mils of spacing between the signal layer and the ground layer.  This allows thicker signal traces while keeping the 50 Ohm impedance.  I then like to space the power plane and the ground plane as close as the manufacturer will allow.  This gives a very good built in power supply bypass capacitor with an ESR lower than you'll ever find in an SMT capacitor.  If you make sure to use double vias on all of your power and ground pins that internal bypass capacitor will help improve high frequency performance.

The dielectric thickness of the other layers is not very critical, so you can just split the remaining thickness between them.

  • Hello Loren san,

    Thank you for the reply.
I understand that thickness of the dielectric is important.
I will inform it to our customer.

By the way, Is thickness of the  THS3201 EVM  0.063" ?

  • Hello Ryuji san,

I don't have one of those boards to measure, so I cannot be 100% sure.   I just do not see any reason that it would not be 0.063". I am not aware of any boards for high speed amplifiers that are a different thickness.
