LM293-EP: Input voltage range

Hi there,

I am trying to design with LM293-EP for my application.

I was not very clear about min/max. input voltage ragne of this comparator from the datasheet.

What is the min/max input voltage range of this comparator?

Can I apply 30V at either input with 5V supply?

Hello Jongjin,

The input range is -0.3V to +36V and is independent of the supply voltage. There is no problem with putting 30V on one or both inputs while the supply voltage is 5V.

Hello Jongjin,

As Kirby says, the inputs can withstand up to 36V on the inputs, but one of the inputs MUST be within the valid input range (0 to 3.5V at 5V supply) for a proper output. See the LM293-EP table note.

But we strongly recommend that the inputs be kept within the valid operating range to meet the datasheet specifications for prop delay, offset voltage and bias current.

Hi Paul,

I think your comment is different from Kirby's one. Kirby said that I can apply 30V to both input pins with 5V supply. You are saying that I should apply 30V to either input and less than 3.5V(5-1.5V) should be applied to the other input pin. Is my understanding correct? If I apply 30V to both input pins, offset, bias and delay may not be gauranted as datasheet.

Hi Jongjin,

both are right: The chip can withstand 30V at both inputs without becoming destroyed. But to make the LM293-EP properly work as comparator at least one input must stay within the valid input voltage range, which is 0...3.5V in your case.
