Hi Team,

The common mode input voltage range of LMV331 with 5V power supply is -0.1~4.2V. In 9.2.2.1 section, it's said that the input voltage range should keep lower than Vcc-0.7V and when IN- and IN+ are both higher than common mode, the output is low and output resistor is sinking current. In the maximum rating table, it shows the input voltage range should be within 0 to Vcc+. Does it mean the IN+ and IN- can be greater than the common mode voltage range without damage the device but if the input voltage is beyond 0~Vcc+, it may be damaged?

Hello Lenna,

There will be no damage when between Vcc-0.7 and Vcc, but proper operation is not ensured.

Damage may occur if the current is not limited to <10mA when the input voltage exceeds the supply voltage.

So, of course, we recommend staying within the specified input voltage range (-0.1 to 4.2V).

Thanks for your reply. Is 10mA the current through IN+ or IN- pin?

Hi Lenna,

both inputs seem to be clamped to the supply rails internally by the help of ESD cells. The current through these ESD clamps must be limited to 10mA. So it should be valid for both inputs.

Correct, the 10mA limit is referring to the inputs.
