BOOSTXL-3PHGANINV: GAN FET fire characteristics

Part Number: BOOSTXL-3PHGANINV

So during the development process I'm used to blowing up FETS, but the difference here is that the board had a sustained fire that had to be put out by a fire extinguisher.  Every other FET failure we've experienced is the usual magic smoke.  Is there something about the nature of the GAN FETs that causes them to burn hotter and brighter than regular FETs?

The issue is if there is a catastrophic failure of this sort in the field and the FET can sustain flames do I risk the entire machine burning down?

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks,

DougM

  • Hi Doug,

We’ve reached out to GaN product experts. Hopefully they can provide any advice soon.

  • Dear Doug,

    Thank you for contacting TI.

It is not clear to us what happened here, but we have not seen this issue.

LMG5200 has been qualified and passed the UL 94 V-0 flammability standard.

    Hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Thanks Masoud,

It actually burned for almost exactly 10 seconds but we were actively trying to blow it out.  The flame was blue and yellow, similar to a gas stove.  The only reason they hit it with the fire extinguisher was to ensure it didn't flame up again.

You can reproduce this by messing with the settings in (SPRACB8A) 7.3.3: Setting the OverCurrent Limit in Software.

    Thanks,

    DougM

Sounds great - thanks.  Our developer assures us that this is never a situation that would happen in a production implementation of the code.
