TLC551: Connecting(shorting) pins 3 and 7.

Part Number: TLC551
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM555, NE555,

Hello,

Can the Output pin be shorted to the Discharge pin? If shorted together, then please observe that in TI's transistor-level equivalent schematic, that there might be substantial shoot through(cross over) current during the transition from high output to low output through the discharge transistor if approximately the condition Vdd > Vthresh*2 holds.

Is there any sort of break-before-make circuit(not shown in the schematic) which might prevent this from happening?

Thanks in advance.

  • Pongo,

The TLC551 shoot through current which is much lower than bipolar NE555/LM555 will be the nearly the same with pin 3 and 7 separate as it is with 3 and 7 together. The transistor for pin 3 and 7 use the same gate drive and the shoot through current is set by the weaker pin 3 PMOS transistor. See data sheet VOH VOL specs and schematic on page 3. There is no break before make.
