It depends on the data rate and whether the data is AC-balanced. If the clock buffer functions at the desired data rate, and if the inputs and outputs can be DC-coupled, then a clock buffer could be used to transfer data. If AC-coupled, the bandwidth of the high-pass filter should be at least one decade lower than the data rate.
