ADS1299 Clinical usage

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1299

Hi .

I'm working in a medical engineering company. One of our products are EEG viewer that is using old discreet amplifiers with huge size.

Now I'm about to redesign our product by ADS1299 chips. What is wondering me is that I can't find any clinical or diagnosis usage of this device. It's totaly used in neurofeedback , MSC thesis or hobby.

Now my question is that "Is there anything wrong with this IC for clinical and diagnosis purpose?" . TI has mentioned in it's EVM board datasheet for ADS1299-FE , that do not use device for diagnosis porpuse. I suggest it's because of its electrical safty.

Does this device work perfect for clinical and diagnosis ?

  • Hey Ali,

The EVM has those disclaimers since it is an "evaluation kit" that has not been approved by regulatory agencies for diagnostic purposes - which is ok since it's just for customers to test the chip's performance. The chip itself can certainly be used in a diagnostic medical device that you design. Obviously all regulatory requirement testing will have to be done by you, but I can say that this device was designed with some of the internationally recognized medical device safety specifications in mind. The end of our datasheets have legal information regarding the use of our chips in life-saving applications.

  • Hi Brain.
Thanks for your response. Beside your explanation about diagnosis application of this chip, I'm courios to know that is there any commerical company that use this chip as its core?

I know about openBCI company but is there any other company that use this chip for more advanced diagnosis purpose? I ask this to compare real performance of this device with other technologies.
  • Hey Ali,

Unfortunately we cannot provide you with the names of our customers unless they have publicly disclosed that they use our devices. However, the EVM should provide you with a good platform to evaluate performance of the ADS1299. What other information can I provide for you that would make it easier to consider using the ADS1299?

  • Hi Brain

Thanks for your clarifications. According to your advice, I will examine ADS1299 by your EVM board at first place. And now I'm more certain about relaiability of your IC in clinical and diagnosis field.

Last thing I want to know is that Is there any special advice for designig PCB layout of this device, using 3 or 4 ADS1299 in it, before I start designing its board?
  • Hey Ali,

The ADS1299 datasheet contains layout suggestions and considerations.
