ADS1256: When to enable the internal buffer and its effects on ADC performance

Part Number: ADS1256

Hi Chris,

I wonder if op amp buffering for the ADS1256 input is necessary and when do we use it for optimal performance

Thank you,

Khoi Ly

  • Hi Khoi,

You are referring to the ADS1256's internal input buffer, correct?

Enabling the ADS1256's internal buffer increases the input impedance of the ADC, is also causes a slight increase in noise. It is needed when using high-output impedance sensors, as the sensor output-impedance will interact with the ADC's input impedance and form a voltage divider (i.e. gain error). Unless your input source is already buffered, then I would usually recommend enabling the internal buffer.
