TCAN1051HV: Bus Fault protection time

Part Number: TCAN1051HV

Hi

The datasheet mentioned the fault protection up to ±70 V .

Is there an rough idea how long can the device sustain for ±70 V fault ?

  • PY,

The absolute maximum ratings indicate the acceptable range of conditions to which the device can be exposed without sustaining damage. The bus fault protection does not have a time limit.

    Best,

    Danny

  • Hi Danny,

My customer saw the device are damaged, if they keep trying to send of receive data from CAN bus when bus fault condition happens.

Can you share what might cause the failure and how to avoid it ?

    Thanks!

  • Hi PY,

Damage to devices is usually a result of thermal considerations (i.e. overheating). When this fault occurs, the device will drive up to its internal current limit. However, this still would require thermal management in the system to dissipate excess heat. If too much heat builds up in the system, you could expect the device to eventually sustain overtemperature damage. This could be one mechanism that could be occurring.

Thermal considerations within the IC are still a product of voltage drop and current flow. Dissipating this thermal energy is a consideration for board design.

    Best,

    Danny
