TVS3301: Surge test on power supply line (2Ω)

Guru 10405 points
Part Number: TVS3301
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVS3300,

Hi team,

I think IEC 61000-4-5 is a 42Ω test on the signal line.
I'd like to confirm how resistant it is when considering using it in a power line.
If you have any results at 2 ohms, please let me know.

Sincerely.
Kengo.

  • Hi Kengo,

Is this for an AC power main?

Power line protection is a common application for our TVS family. Our devices are spec'd with a 42 Ohm coupling network due to the surge typically only being able to enter the cable through capacitive coupling for many cases. Our TVS devices won't be able to protect from a 1kV surge with a 2 Ohm network, that would be a 500 A peak pulse current rating, is this level of protetction a requirement in your application?

    Regards,

    Sebastian

  • Hi Sebastian,

I'm Inoue and working with Kengo.

    I have an additional question.

    Could you please advise.

    ---

    I understand TVS3300 cannot protect from a 1kV surge with a 2Ohm network, 500 A peak pulse current.

In this case, how many amperes can TVS3301 withstand when connected to 2Ω and tested 1kV surge under IEC61000-4-5 test condition?

It is not necessary to pass IEC61000-4-5 test.

The application is Safety of Industrial.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

The TVS3300 and TVS3301 cannot survive a 1kV surge with a 2 Ohm network. They might be able to survive a much lower voltage (<70 V) surge with a 2 Ohm network to stay below the peak current rating (35 A for TVS3300), however we didn't spec these devices with a 2 Ohm network so we don't have any char data.

    Regards,

    Sebastian

  • Hi Sebastian,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand TLV3301 cannot withstand 1kV surge in a 2ohm network and doesn't have any characterization data.

There are also no measured data in a 2ohm network.

    I'll share with the customer.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

When the customer has an additional question, I consult you again.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi
