I have a question from customer. Can you please advise on below?

I have a question regarding the USB3.0 hub and the USB-c connectors.
In the USB3.0 there are 3 differential pairs - D+ and D-; SSTX+ and SSTX-; SSRX+ and SSRX-. In the USB-C standard there are two more couples RX1; RX2; TX1; TX2. So if the USB-c connector is used for 3.0 operation is it accepted RX1+ and RX2+ to be shorted at the USB-C connector (the same for TX1- and TX2+/-)? This should allow plugging the USB cable in both directions washout necessity of additional multiplexing of the connections.

No, you have to use active or passive MUX, and CC controller to support USB Type-C connection implementation.

For active MUX solution, you can use TUSB542 + TUSB32x CC controller family.

For passive MUX solution, you can use HD3SS3212 + TUSB32x CC controller or integrated mux and CC controller HD3SS3220 solution.

Thanks for your response.

I have a follow up question. What the short could cause? My customer would like to avoid adding another IC, and would rather use only D+ and D-, if this is possible.

You can short D+ and D-. But for SSTX+/- and SSRX+/-, you can not short them. You have to use active or passive MUX as shorting them will create signal integrity at 5Gbps due to reflection from the shorting. Shorting them is also a violate of the USB3 spec.
