Hi David,
Redrivers use equalization and gain adjustment to compensate for insertion loss and re-transmit an equalized signal.
Retimers use the same techniques to equalize an attenuated signal, while also using a CDR circuit to filter jitter out of the same signal.
Redrivers and retimers can both compensate for insertion loss, while only retimers are designed to compensate for random jitter.
