TLIN1029A-Q1: Variable Resistor on LIN (pin6)

Part Number: TLIN1029A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ESD751-Q1, ESD1LIN24-Q1

Hello team,

My customer is asking me about the below item. Can you tell me your opinion?

<Question>

- Is it OK to place a chip varistor between LIN(pin6) and GND?

<Spec of the varistor>

Maximum permitted circuit voltage: 26V
Varistor Voltage Range: 30.6 to 37.4V
Varistor Voltage (Tolerance): 33V
Max. Specified capacitance: 100pF

<Background>

- My customer is doing a surge test based on IEC61000-6-2. The surge voltage is applied to LIN(pin6).

- They tried 2 tests. (Place of 1. Zener diode, 2. TVS diode:  ESD751-Q1 and ESD1LIN24-Q1)

- But the tests was fail. Pin 6 was broken by the surge voltage. So they are considering to apply a chip varistor.

Best regards,

Shotaro

  • Hi Shotaro,

    TLIN1029A does not meet the requirement of IEC61000-6-2, which is EMC immunity for industrial environment. Those ESD diodes they used ESD protection components can provide automotive level ESD protection according to IEC61000-4-2. Regarding their question, it is OK to use a varistor as ESD protection.

    Regards,
