MAX3232: Charge pump capacitor voltage rating

Part Number: MAX3232

Hello TI,

I am using MAX3232 RS-232 transceiver operated at 3.3V. I would like to use either 0.1uF,10%,0201,10V ceramic capacitor or 0.1uF,10%,0402,25V for C1-C4. My question is, the charge pump capacitor voltage can reach upto 6.6V, so is it advisable to use 10V cap due to derating reasons ? If I use 25V capacitor will the capacitance drop since i am operating at 3.3V ? Note : I dont have an option to use 16V capacitor.

Best Regards,

Manoj.

  • Hi Manoj,

So with your possible choices I'd pick the 25V rated capacitors. In general, I am assuming you are using ceramic caps, the minimum voltage rating I try to pick is 2x the expected max voltage as when you get above 50% of rated voltage you typically start seeing pretty extensive derating from the capacitors - so with that being said it would be about 13.2V is the smallest I'd pick (that is usually why I go with 16V) but if you don't have that option 25V is 100% okay.
