DS90UB954-Q1EVM: DS90UB954 compatibility, and DS90UB953 CSI 2 input compatibility

Part Number: DS90UB954-Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS90UB929-Q1, DS90UB940-Q1, DS90UB949-Q1

Hi,

This is regarding the DS90UB953/954 serializer/deserializer pair.

Can we connect the 954  to 933/913A also? Are they compatible?

Also, regarding the MIPI CSI 2 input interface to the 953,  is it compatible with any MIPI CSI 2 Tx source?

Are there any specific parameters on the MIPI CSI 2 Tx that should match to the 953? like the data types ( RAW,RGB etc. ), or the pixel modes, or the virtual channels etc.?

Do we have any HDMI to FPD-Link III solution that is directly compatible with the 954?

Thanks and Regards,

  • Hello Archit,

Can we connect the 954 to 933/913A also? Are they compatible?
    Yes

Also, regarding the MIPI CSI 2 input interface to the 953, is it compatible with any MIPI CSI 2 Tx source?
So long as the CSI-2 source is compliant to the MIPI CSI-2 standard it is compatible

Are there any specific parameters on the MIPI CSI 2 Tx that should match to the 953? like the data types ( RAW,RGB etc. ), or the pixel modes, or the virtual channels etc.?
No, just make sure to note the MIPI CSI-2 version and the DPHY versions supported by our device in the datasheet first page

Do we have any HDMI to FPD-Link III solution that is directly compatible with the 954?
We do not have a solution like this at the moment, however we have DS90UB949-Q1/DS90UB929-Q1 which are HDMI input serializers, and we have DS90UB940-Q1 which is a CSI-2 deserializer. Those two devices are compatible with each other.

  • Thanks Casey,
However, i need to interface the HDMI to FPD-Link III serializer to the 954.
As per my understanding the DS90UB949-Q1/DS90UB929-Q1 which are HDMI input serializers, are not compatible with the 954 de-serializer.

    Kindly confirm.

  • Hello Archit,

We don't have an HDMI serializer which is directly compatible with 954 but the 929/949 are compatible with 940 if you need to deserialize the HDMI into CSI-2.

  • Thanks .
So, if i connect the HDMI to CSI 2 Tx Output from the 929/949 to the CSI 2 input of the 953 ( isolating the image sensor), and then connect it to the 954 via FPD-link III, will it work?

So, basically, can i connect the CSI 2 output of 929/949 as the image sensor input to the 953?

    Kindly let me know.

    Thanks and Regards,

  • Hello Archit,

The following scenario should work if this is what you are asking:

    HDMI TX ->949/929->940->953->954->CSI-2 RX

Just make sure that the data rate requirements for 953 are taken into account since 953 can support up to 800Mbps/lane max.

    Casey
  • Thanks.

    That was my query.

However, when checked the image/display resolutions, found that they do not match.

have tried to depict it in the picture below.

If the bpp and the clock rate do not match, can the Serializer/deserializer adjust to the incoming stream?

For example the 940 will generate a stream with 24 bpp. But the 953 has a color depth of only 12 bpp.

Just want to ensure that this scenario will work before proceeding.

    Thanks in advance.

  • The 953 doesn't only support 12bpp. It can support any CSI-2 frame format and will pass it through un-altered. This includes RGB888/24bpp. The only thing you need to consider is the data rate requirement which depends on the resolution you are trying to support. For FHD 1920x1080 @ 60 fps 24 bpp, the bandwidth is most likely too high for 953 depending on blanking. Please verify the required pixel clock including blanking. Also the max PCLK values for 953/949 can not be compared directly because the FPD frame sizes are different. I would focus for 949 input on the PCLK and for 953 input on the CSI-2 rate which are not going to be exactly the same because CSI-2 has overhead in the protocol.
