TVS3300: Protecting 24V input power supply

Hi,

I am using LM53635-Q1 DC/DC converter to generate 5V system power supply from +24V automotive battery. Absolute maximum rating for input voltage on LM53635-Q1 is +40V, so using the conventional 33V TVS would not protect it given that clamping voltage is >45V. Using TVS with lower voltage is not an option because it would affect the normal operation conditions.

I believe TVS3300 would be a good alternative for conventional TVS.

Do you see any problem in using TVS3300 for +24V/1A input power line or, alternatively, do you have any other suggestion?

    The problem is that the TVS would have to be rated for automotive battery transients such as load dump and the TVS3300 is not rated for load dump because it is too much power dissipation.

    Thank you very much for the prompt reply and apologies for the delay - I've replied to your post but today noticed that for some reason my reply didn't go through.

    I take your point. However, I've mentioned "automotive" power supply more as indication of the input power supply range. This module is not connected directly to 24V battery and we have input protection elsewhere to deal with the issues like load dump.

    My concern is long cable between two modules (that carries the power for this module as well as few interface lines) and protection from potential transients.

    Any other suggestion if TVS3300 is not suitable?

    What is the maximum voltage that the system can be exposed to?

    TVS3300 can work if you are talking about a system that will stay below 33V except for a surge or ESD event.

    My apologies, been out of office for couple of weeks - max system operational voltage is 32V, so it should be ok.

    We are going to test prototype boards in about 3-4 weeks, so hopefully everything goes well.
