DP83867IR: Wol mode power comsumption

Part Number: DP83867IR

Hi team,

Customer is using DP83867IRRGZ, and they want to use WoL mode. They want to know how to use this and the power consumption when it enters low power mode.

I have found http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla241/snla241.pdf and http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla261/snla261.pdf. But I did not know which is related to Wol low power mode? There are many low power mode in the SNLA241.

And is SNLA261 a good reference for customer to use WoL in DP83867? Thanks.

  • Hi Jeff,

Are you looking for power savings on a system level or a PHY level? When the PHY receives a WoL packet, it sends a signal to wake up the MAC, so link is still active, and so is the PHY. The WoL feature is not itself a low power mode. Please review section 8.3.1 of the datasheet for more details. SNLA241 shows power consumption under different low power modes.

    Thank you,

    Nikhil

  • Hi Nikhil,

Thanks for reply. I check with customer, actual customer wants low power mode, not WoL.

But in customer's application, the communication is random, can not use timer to turn on the PHY. Which low power mode is best?

  • Hi Jeff,

Are you looking for Energy Efficient Ethernet?

With the DP83867, Active Sleep may be a solution. Please review Section 8.5.6 of the datasheet for more information.

    Thank you,

    Nikhil
