DP83848H: Difference between voltage mode and current mode line driver

Hi Team

I have to select Phy for one of our application , while browsing TI solution i understand TI offer Voltage mode as well as current mode line driver. Please let me know what are the advantages and disadvantages of both ? What should be the consideration while selecting a solution?

Hi Abishek,

The DP83848 is a current mode line driver. The curent mode line driver needs external termination/biase network. The voltage mode line driver does not need these items.

Thanks for reply. Does current mode line driver has any advantage over voltage mode driver ? Is there is any use case where we should prefer current mode driver?

Hi Abhishek,

Current mode line drivers need more external components. Voltage mode line drivers use less power and have integrated termination resistors meaning less of a BOM count.
