THVD2410: THVD2410 front end protection circuit

Part Number: THVD2410

Hi

I have selected the THVD2410 for my design, I have a below requirement

1. I have master controller on my board with THVD2410 transciever.

2. Bus input/output should have protection for ESD-IEC 61000-4-2, ISO16050 Pulse a, b surge (50V, 100uS), 24V battery short

I can see , device compliance with ESD. but do i need to have addition circuit protection for surge and short circuit. If yes, please suggest the recommended circuit.

Thanks

Dinesh

  • Hi Dinesh,

THVD2410 is rated at +-12kv per IEC 61000-4-2 for both Contact Discharge and Air-gap Discharge (Section 6.3). The bus pins are tolerant to +-25v input voltages (+-70v Abs Max for Fault protection) and can withstand a 24v battery voltage (Section 6.4 and 6.1). I am not aware that this device is rated under any ISO standard (I believe there was a typo in "ISO16050" - Foodstuffs), however the datasheet does include graphs modeling the surge tests conducted for IEC compliance testing which shows a surge over several us (Section 9.2.1.4).

For greater bus protection we recommend including TVS diodes on the bus traces near the connections to the board. Including these devices will provide an additional means of power dissipation for the system if it is struck by a longer surge pulse. An example layout for this placement is included in Section 11.2 of the datasheet.

Let me know if you have any other questions or if you're interested in more protection circuit examples.

    Regards,
    Eric
