TPD2S017: ESD protection VCC

Hi,

for a ultra low power 3v3 device I need some protection- Usually there is no USB cable connected but the user needs to connect one for updating the mcu or downloading data.

Is this TPD2S017 suitable for low power operation (as said usually no cable is connected) in terms of leakage etc.

Do I need to connect the VCC of this chip to VUSB or the 3v3 VCC of the mcu? Or can it left open as it's written optinal in the pdf?

    Unless you are really wanting the integrated EMI filter on this chip, I would use a device with a lower Vrwm to improve performance and protection. For 3.3 V USB 2.0 data lines, I would recommend ESD122. This device has a 3.6 V Vrwm, much closer to your operating voltage. However, if you are also wanting to protect the VBUS line, I would recommend using a TVS0500 surge protection device. This is a 5 V Vrwm part since the stand VBUS voltage is 5 V.

    thanks for your reply. I'm not 100% sure as I don't have enough experience with USB circuits but your ESD122 could be ok for my purpose. VBUS is not necessarily needed for my application.

    I have another question related to input protection. I have a input pin of my mcu that is connected to an open collector output. The input has the internal pull-up activated. Can you recommend me a protection circuit with TI parts? Between the open collector output and the input of my mcu is approx 2m wire. Low leakage is required as everything is battery powered

    Ok here's some questions that will help me narrow down my recommendation:

    • What is the normal operating voltage of the line(s) you are protecting?
    • How many lines are you wanting to protect?
    • Will the signals on these lines oscillate between positive and negative voltages?
    • What is the maximum amount of capacitance you are looking for?
