SN75DP139: the simplest way to convert DP to HDMI

Part Number: SN75DP139
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65DP159, , SN75DP159

Hi,

I'm very new to DP and HDMI interface, and designing a small dongle which converts DP to HDMI without any external access.

I found some TI products; SN75DP139, SN65DP159, SN75DP159, and etc.

I just looked over the datasheets, but I'm not sure which one would be the best for my case.

Below is my questions.

1. What is the difference between SN65DP159 and SN75DP159?

2. Do they need to be programmed by external I2C? (I see an external I2C port via USB on the EVM boards. )

I mean, this dongle has to work standalone without any changes on the registers as it was produced.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi,

Are you referring to DP or DP++?

Both the DP139 and DP159 are DP++ to HDMI passive level shifter. For DP to HDMI, you would need an active protocol converter.

    1. What is the difference between SN65DP159 and SN75DP159?

SN65DP159 is from -40 to 85C while the SN75DP159 is from 0 to 85C operating temperaturre.

    2. Do they need to be programmed by external I2C? (I see an external I2C port via USB on the EVM boards. )

No, both of them can be operated either in pin-strap mode or the I2C mode.

    Thanks

    David

  • Hi David,

Thank you for the kind reply.

    I'm considering DP, not DP++.

I just understand why you wrote I would need an active protocol converter.

Do you have any suggestion for me?

  • Hi,

DP and HDMI are two different protocols while the DP++ is HDMI protocol with DP signaling.

So to convert from DP to HDMI, you would need to convert between the two protocols and also the electrical signaling -> active protocol converter.

To convert from DP++ to HDMI, you keep the HDMI protocol but convert only the electrical signaling -> passive level shifter

Unfortunately we do not have a DP to HDMI active protocol converter solution. But you can check with Parade PS176 which can convert from DP to HDMI.

    Thanks

    David

  • Oh, I see.

    Thank you David.
