Hi team,

Question from a customer-

Several years ago we designed a new processor board with a touchscreen. The same processor mates to several screen sizes. This board has 3 - RS485 ports and uses 3 - SN65HVD33D.

 

We are introducing a replacement processor board for use with the touchscreens. It will directly replace the older board in all applications, plus one additional one. This additional application has longer cable runs and larger amounts of data on the RS485. The processor that was previously used in this application, did not have a touchscreen and used SN75LBC184P in half duplex.

On different ports and applications, we communicate at 9,600, 19,200, 38,400, 57,600, and 115,200 baud; since this is relatively slow speed, some members of our team believe that we should be using a chip with a slower specified speed. We have had some communication issues of unknown cause with the SN65HVD33D. One team member suggested Renesas/Intersil ISL32600EFBZ. I prefer Texas Instruments.

 

So I have 3 questions:

Would a slower chip help us and can you suggest a Texas Instruments replacement for SN65HVD33D?

 

Is there a full-duplex transceiver in a DIP package that could be in a socket on the PCB for easy field replacement?

 

Can you suggest a better part for use in our older designs to replace the SN75LBC184P in an 8-DIP package?

 

We have been using SN75LBC184P, half-duplex, in a DIP-8 socket for about 20 years with no problems, except if our customers building takes a lightning strike, the transceivers need to be replaced, hence the socket.
