TUSB212: Placement Questions

Part Number: TUSB212
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB216I

Hi Expert,

Customer has connector to bridge CPU board and main board.

Here is the estimate layout of USB trace

CPU <=6inch=> SMT_CONN <=20inch=> USB_A_CONN

Refer to Intel design guide, trace length of “2 Connector Topology” recommend to less than 8 inch.

Intend to add TUSB212 to solve trace length issue,

Please suggest where is more proper to place TUSB212 or if recommend to have two TUSB212?

Two methods below we are thinking of and would like to have your advise. If you have other suggestions, please let us know.

  • if the below location of TUSB212 OK?

CPU <=6inch=> SMT_CONN <=20inch=> TUSB212 <=1inch=>USB_A_CONN

  • or if we could add 2x TUSB212 such like:

CPU <=6inch=> SMT_CONN <=2inch=> TUSB212 <=19inch=> TUSB212 <=1inch=>USB_A_CONN

Thanks,

Allan

  • Hi Allan,

    USB redriver placement recommendation is to place as close to the USB connector as possible. Without understanding the lose of the cables themselves between main board and I/O board it is hard to tell whether two TUSB212 would be needed. The nice thing here is that TUSB212 package allows for both devices to be designed in and pop/no-pop as needed. See recommended layout in datasheet for an example. Placement in both cases is good, If internal cable is high quality then only one TUSB212 may be needed (Case 1). You can also refer to our latest TUSB216I with has better redriving capability than TUSB212.
