TPD1E04U04: will this diode clamp 20V DC at 3A?

We are planning to use TPD1E04U04 for VBUS line of MicroUSB in our design. According to the fast charging standard of power delivery 1.0, the product can be charged with a voltage of 20V and 3A.

The diode below has a low clamping voltage. My question is if this TLP spec only applicable for short ESD pulse or also constant DC voltage? Based on the datasheet, TLP for 1A is 5.3V and 1.3V respectively.

Hi,

Welcome to E2E!

It is not recommended to exceed the reverse working voltage of our ESD devices. Once the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage, 6.2V typical for TPD1E04U04, the current going though the diode will damage the device in a DC condition. I do not recommend to use this device if it will be exposed to a 20V DC input.

hi andy,

i feel that only TVS1401 will be suitable for my application because of 20.5V clamp voltage. i feel the rest are not suitable. please confirm.

Hi,

The TVS1401 has a breakdown voltage of 17.6V typical. At 20V the device will be in the breakdown region which current could damage the device. In order to be able to support the 20V you will need a device with a working voltage of up to 20V. The TVS2201 has a working voltage of up to 22V which could support the 20V input. A device with a lower working voltage than the 20V will result getting damaged or will deteriorate the lifetime of the device.

hi andy,

we just need one bidirectional diode to protect one pin. do you have it? TVS2201 has 4 separate diode in it.

Hi,

It seems like the TVS2201 has 4 different protection channels, but the TVS2201 is a single channel device. All 4 IN pins need to be connected to the signal/power rail to provide the protection described in the datasheet. Below is an example of the layout, all IN pins are connected to the same rail:

sorry. I realize this after asking the question. i mean, do TI have smaller part with clamp voltage above 20V? this parts seems big for us.

Hi,

Unfortunately the only ESD/surge protection devices in that voltage range is our TVSxxx family of devices for which the TVS2201 would be the best fit for the application.
