PCL pin current limiter working of TPS7H1101-SP

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7H1101-SP

Hello,

We are planning to use TPS7H1101-SP device, In TPS7H1101-SP device we want to use the PCL pin to limit the output current.

we have below queries on the current limiter as listed below

  • Current limiter is based on the programmable OPAM(current sense) based internally.
  • Or Current limiter is based on the Thermal shut down.

we are looking for the device with internal OPAM, which senses the output current, when ever output current cross the threshold set, device should go to shut down based on sense.

Please let me know, do you need any other information.

  • Sunil,

    As highlighted in the datasheet

A resistor connected from the programmable current limit (PCL) terminal to ground sets the over current limit
activation point. When overcurrent limit activation point is reached, it results in LDO going into current foldback
mode. Output current is reduced to approximately 50% of the current limit set point.
Using equation 8 in the datasheet one can calculate the value of Rpcl. Also note CSR - current sense ratio varies from 47394 min to 56000 max as indicated in the electrical table.
Current limit is based upon internal circuitry, thus if you test to see what the CSR is in your device/ setup then you will get more accurate current limit trip point.
When CS pin is held high, it will enable foldback current limit as well.
Thermal shutdown is another protection feature designed in the IC independent of the current limit circuitry.
  • Hi Team,

I have Query regarding the over current shutdonw.

When the PCL(Over current limit)  is trigged, will the LDO will get shut down.

  • Sunil,

When Over current limit is triggered,  LDO output will go low/ shut down.  However when the overload condition is removed output will recover.

  • Hello Ramesh Khanna,

    Thanks for your reply.

As per the datasheet and your reply earlier, when ever over current limit triggers, output current is reduce to 50% of the current limit set. In that case still the shut down will happen, can you please share more details on this.

And also, can you please share the timining details, after how much time will the shut down will occur after the OCP triggers. And timinig details recover of the LDO when OCP is removed.

    Regards
