Page 4 of the data sheet says that the absolute maximum input voltage range is -0.5 to +6.5 volts. Note 2 says that the negative rating may be exceeded if the maximum input current rating of -50 mA is observed. Can the positive voltage rating also be exceeded if the current is limited to +50 mA?

No. An excessicve negative voltage would make a large current flow through the clamping diode, and limiting the current would protect the diode. An excessive positive voltage would break down the gate isolation, and there is nothing to protect against that.

Hey Mike,

Clemens is correct. I just wanted to add on that if you want to have an integrated positive clamp diode, there aren't any options in the 1G14 category, but the SN74HCS14 does include positive clamp diodes on all inputs. You can also add an external clamp diode to protect the input of the SN74LVC1G14.
