EVM430-FR6047: Flow Rate

Hi,

Good Day.

The customer is working with the EVM430-FR6047 board to measure the flow rate in a pipe. He is wondering if it is capable of detecting ranges around 17GPM or 25GPM.

He knows it is kind of specific but on the online documentation it was not clear on the upper limits of its capability.

He is using 1MHz sensors and the signal that is picked up is very poor. Even after changing the parameters around it doesn't look good so he was wondering if it wasn't able to handle the flow rate.

  • The Ultrasonic Library is capable of measuring 8800 liters per hour (40 GPM) in a DN25 pipe. See SLAA837A, FAQ on Ultrasonic Sensing.

    The signal quality is based almost entirely on transducer geometries and spool piece design. If your customer is trying a clamp-on method, it becomes even more difficult to get a high quality signal without proper mechanical design. TI never produced a reference design for a clamp-on meter, only wetted transducer methodologies are officially supported.

    In addition to Seth's response I'd like to add a couple things:

    • The upper limit of the ultrasonic measurement is mainly determined by the flow dynamics. Once the fluid flow becomes turbulent ultrasonic measurements lose accuracy.
    • I would recommend that the customer try to get a clean signal when the fluid in the system is at a standstill before trying to take measurements on a moving fluid.
