MSP430F5438A: Error When Testing with FlashPro430

Part Number: MSP430F5438A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH

Tool/software:

Error message appears when attempting to test with FlashPro430 (Flash Programmer for MSP430 MCUs).

The following details have been provided:

  1. None of the ICs in this lot can be programmed.
  2. JTAG can be initialized. JTAG Fuse has been checked to be good.
  3. But the IC’s PN cannot be identified by the JTAG programmer.
  4. The MSP430F5438A bare die have been used on 5 products since 2021 but this is the first time this problem is seen.
  5. The related PCBA layouts haven’t changed since 2021. The PCBA flex and wire bonds were inspected, and they are good.
  6. When using FlashPro430, the SBW seems to be initialized fine but it reports unknown device and report “MSP430 FFFF” for target device PN.

Any insight on how to troubleshoot or otherwise resolve this issue are greatly appreciated.

This testing error is causing a huge impact on production - 5 product lines are down. Please consider this request urgent.

  • Hi,

Several test they can do on their side.

    1. Use Uniflash to try if they can successfully flash the device.

    2. Use Uniflash/FlashPro 430 to try to read the device ID from the issued MCU. Check if it matches the below table.

    3. Try with JTAG connection instead of SWD interface.

    Best regards,

    Cash Hao
