Tool/software:
Hello,
I am posting again about this issue and hoping someone finally gets back to me with any sort of help.
I have been attempting to use an MSP-FET to flash a MSP430F2617 via a JTAG interface. In lieu of having my own PCB ready, I have been using TI's DRV8955PEVM evaluation module to attempt to program this MSP430.
When I plug in the MSP-FET, upon initial connection I see it show up as two COM port devices. I open up CCS (this time I used version 12.8.1) and I am prompted top update the firmware on the FET. I tried to hit 'Ignore' but that did not work either. I attempted to update the firmware and the update fails, causing the COM ports to disappear and causing my FET to be corrupted.
I have tried this with two separate FETs now, both with the same result. I have reached out to TIs customer support but they are entirely useless and will not help me outside of E2E. It takes DAYS for a response to get something like "Sorry, please wait another 24 hours." It's been 2 weeks since I made the first forum post and I have had two replies since then with no resolution.
Please, someone, anyone, help me figure this out, otherwise I need to move away from MSP430 entirely because I can't even program it. I will use BSL as a backup but I need to ensure that I can program the chip correctly so that I can prototype and test different firmware.
If the MSP-FET does not respond to software commands or firmware updates, a cold boot is the last option to bring it back to operation. For more details you can refer to section 5.6.5.3 MSP-FET HID Cold Boot
Hi Gary,
I have attempted the cold boot as well, with no luck. Even with a cold boot, the device remains an HID and I cannot get any software (CCS, UniFlash, MSPFlasher) to correct the firmware corruption. This has happened with two separate MSP-FETs.
You can try this tool
1031.FET-Pro430-Lite-Setup-V3.3.zip
you can read the current version of the firmware
You can also to do the firmware update with this tool.
Hi Gary,
I am not sure what this means because I am using an MSP-FET and not an MSP-FET430UIF. Not sure if it is different.
When I attempt the firmware update, I am met with recovery failed:
At 67%, the green and red LED turn off and the device reconnects and I am met with "recovery failed".
Any other advice on how to proceed?
This is interesting however, I have not seen this message before.
Maybe this provides some clues?
Here is what I get from myside
I am using the version of below
maybe you can download a new one from the web Flash and Gang Programmers - Download and Summary (elprotronic.com)
I can try to apply a new one for you but could you can help to ship the failed one to me?
Hi Gary,
My MSP-FET comes up with no firmware, as you can see from my previous screenshot. I believe that is because it is completely corrupted. The device is not recognized as a COM device and therefore I'm not able to program it with a new firmware.
What should I be downloading from the elprotronic website? How would I be able to ship it to you? Can you add me as a friend so we can discuss in private?
Ok, there is a other option that you can read the firmware of the MSP-FET's firmware in a working one by J4 with JTAG interface by another working MSP-FET
Hi Gary, I appreciate the support.
I determined that the issue was due to underlying OS driver problems related to CCS' operation with Windows 11. I used a Windows 10 VM and was able to update the corrupted firmware and now everything works properly with Windows 11 and the most recent version of CCS (12.8.1)
