MSP430FG6626: Crystal Usage

Expert 3120 points
Part Number: MSP430FG6626

Tool/software:

Hi team,

Customer is looking to use MSP430FG6626 on a new project with focus on the USB, DAC, and built-in LDO. There are a couple questions in regards to the device:

  1. For the LDO, if they are to use the internal LDO (VBUS pin), what will they need to do for the VUSB pin?  In the datasheet, it looks like these are both on the same pin, so is it not possible to use both the integrated LDO and USB?
  2. Does it need two Clocks or Crystals?
  3. Can you recommend Crystal part numbers for 4MHz and 32.768KHz? (I know of the MSP430 32-kHz Crystal Oscillators app note but I’ve not seen anything for 4MHz)
  4. What is the max DAC O/P voltage?

Best,

Luke

  • Hi Luke, thanks for reaching out. Please find my responses below:

    1. The LDO In/Out is only available for the FG6426 and FG6425 devices, whereas the USB is only available on the FG6625 and FG6626

    2. The XT1 and XT2 connections are not required unless you need an additional high/low frequency clock for your application for higher performance or lower power consumption in LPM.

    3. For the 4MHz part recommendations, there are a lot of different manufacturers so hard to say without knowing your exact requirements, but you should be able to find a low cost option, just be sure you are cognizant of the load capacitance, supply voltage, etc. For the 32.768kHz, you can look at this article which has some recommended parts.

    4. The maximum DAC output voltage will be determined by your VREF input that is selected as the reference, but the chart below describes the max output for the DAC

    Hope this helps! -Brian

  • Brian,

Thanks for the response! This is super helpful.
