MSP430 Launchpad as a Programmer

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR6972, MSP430FR6989

I am planning to buy a MSP430FR6989 LaunchPad board to evaluate the MSP430FR6972.In the future, will i be able to use the Flash Emulation Toll available on the launchpad to program my target hardware[MSP430FR6972].?

  • Hi Punit,

The MSP430FR6989 LaunchPad you are planning to buy has an eZ-FET on board for it's emulator.  If you look at the MSP Debuggers User's Guide, table 1 on page 4, it shows what all capabilities each emulator has, and which devices it supports.  the eZ-FET is marked as "Supports all programmable MSP430 and CC430 devices", so yes, you will be able to program your target device (MSP430FR6972) with the eZ-FET.  You just need to jump the SBW signals (SBWTDIO and SBWTCK) from the emulator side of the launchpad to the correct pins on the target board.  Also, you will at least need GND, and VCC (if the target board is not powered elsewhere).  Keep in mind the eZ FET is only 3.3V capable, so you you must make sure the if you power the target device elsewhere, it needs to be at 3.3V.
