MSP430 FET UIF Not recognised CCS 4.0 Version

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FE425A

Dear Forum Members ,

This is Vinay from Bangalore. I am currently using CCS 4.0 Core edition for programming the MSP430 FE425A device. The system was working perfectly over the last 3 months & then after i installed the Quartus IDE & USB programmer, the CCS is no longer recognising the MSP430 FET UIF.

The project is in the last phase & i need some help to get the IDE to recognise the FET UIF so that i can download the program onto the target board.

I have attached a word file which has screenshots of the error & configeration of system etc. Any help on this issue will be a life saver.

Regards,

Vinay

  • Hi Vinay,

It seems like the word file you tried to attach did not attach properly. In order to attach the file, reply using rich formatting and click the paperclip icon.

Here are some questions/suggestions that I have:

    • Have you tried uninstalling Quartus IDE & USB Programmer and seeing if the issue is still occurring?
    • Do you have another MSP-FET430UIF that you can try using to see if that one is recognized?
    • Can you try using a different USB cable?
    • Have you tried using your MSP-FET430UIF on a different computer to see if it is recognized there?
    • Can you uninstall and reinstall the drivers found here? http://www.ti.com/tool/mspds

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Akash ,

Thanks a lot for the reply.

I am trying to install the same in a different computer which has Windows XP SP3 & desktop with WIndows 7. It is to no avail.

The MSP430 FET - UIF gets recognised as a CDC device automatically in the WINDOWS XP SP3 laptop. I tried to do a downgrade but unable to find the option in START- ALL PROGRAMS- TEXAS INSTRUMENTS- MSP FETDEBUGGER - VER3 to Ver 2 .

The only option i get is START- ALL PROGRAMS- TEXAS INSTRUMENTS-CCS Version 4.0 , Uninstall CCS4 .0 & Release notes.

My FET is the V1.4a version.

I realise that the system needs to use a VCP option & not a CDC. however i am trying to roll back but unsuccessful.

    Kindly help.

    Vinay
  • Hi Vinay,

Here is the MSP430 Hardware Tools User Guide: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau278y/slau278y.pdf

Below is a snippet of the hardware installation for the MSP-FET430UIF. Please go through the steps and let me know if you continue to have issues and if so, at which step.

Also if you could attach the word document that you collected screenshots in, that would be helpful. Thank you.

    Regards,

    Akash Patel

  • Dear Akash,

Thank you replying again. I did try as per the slau278 document in my laptop. The screen shots are of the same.

The system i think is recognising the FET as a CDC device when connected. When not connected, the PORTS section doesnt show the device. I have attached the doc file with snapshots of the error & device manager details.

On another note, when i installed this on a another system with WINDOWS 7, the device is recognised as a VCP device . The FET still does not get recognised.

incase you are unable to view the doc file, please give me an email &  i shall email the same.

    Regards,

    Vinay

  • Dear Akash,

The point where i am stuck is 3. The red light DOES NOT glow. It was glowing a week ago when everything was working perfectly. Unfortunately , nothing now.

  • Hi Vinay,

I was able to get the document from Aravind from this E2E thread: e2e.ti.com/.../1832152

I have reached out to someone on our team here at TI for some additional assistance regarding the issue that you seem to be having.

  • Hi Vinay,

Between the time you said it was working and the time that it was not working, did you plug the MSP-FET430UIF into another computer running a newer version of CCS?

If so, that might have updated the firmware on your FET to V3 instead of V2.

    Regards,
    Akash Patel
  • Hi Akash,

Yes, I installed the CCS 6.1 with latest updates & connected the FET. The red lights blinked. Which i presume means that the self check worked.

The FET then asked for a FIRMWARE update . I clicked YES on the options.

    I have 2 problems

    1. When i compile the program, the code which was compiling correctly when i use CCS 4.1.2 is now throwing up these errors.

"../lnk_msp430fe425a.cmd", line 54: error: program will not fit into available
memory. run placement with alignment fails for section ".bss" size 0x2c4 .
    Available memory ranges:
RAM size: 0x200 unused: 0x1b0 max hole: 0x1b0
error: errors encountered during linking; "OPM_TSEC_NO_TIMER.out" not built

    >> Compilation failure
    gmake: *** [OPM_TSEC_NO_TIMER.out] Error 1
gmake: Target `all' not remade because of errors.

    **** Build Finished ****

    2. When i press DEBUG , Im asked " Workspace has error , Proceed with errors ? ", I click YES.

    ERROR RECEIVED IS

    Error connecting to the target:
    Unknown device

    Please help.

    Regards,

    Vinay
  • Dear Akash,

    The current update is this.

I did a firmware downgrade on the FET device from V3 to V2. The device was set as a VCP device.

I reinstalled the CCS 4.1.2 version on the system. The system now recognises the FET, The 3 red flashes & 1 green led turns on.

HOWEVER, i get the following error now
    Error initializing emulator:
    Could not communicate with FET

Thank you for all the help so far. I couldnt have figured the firmware downgrade till you pointed it out.

This is update as of 15th April 4pm IST.

    Regards

    Vinay
  • Hi Akash,

    The problem.is solved.

This is what i presume what happened.
The VCP driver was corrupted and when i downloaded the CCS 6.x on a different system, the FET firmware was updated and was veing recognised as a CDC device.

The solution which got it working was...

Use the downgrader tool from CCS 6.1.2 to change firmware from V3 to V2. The downgrade was performed by the UpdateTool which is in yhe debugServer/ drivers folder. There are 2 files V3V2 & V2V3.

The V3V2 is the downgrade file. Type Y + Enter and follow instructions .

Reinstalled the CCS4.x version and connect the FET.

The FET was recognised as a VCP device again.

Checked if there are conflicting COM ports.

FET works like a charm again.

Thank you for all the support. Can't be mkre grateful. The pointer that firmware might have been uograded when connected to CCS6.x gave me a direction to work.

    Thanks a ton again
  • Hi Vinay,

Great to hear that you were able to get your FET up and running again! Thank you for taking the time out to report your fix. Hopefully this will help others who might come across a similar issue in the future.

    Akash Patel
