debug MSP432 with MSP-FET in SWD mode

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET

Hello,

My customer is plannning to debug MSP432 with SWD(Serial Wire Debug) protocol.
His environment is
MSP432(customboard) + MSP-FET + MSP-FET-432ADPTR + CCSv6.3

We know MSP-FET supports SWD from here.
store.ti.com/msp-fet.aspx
"Supports ARM JTAG and ARM SWD debug protocols"

but we cat't find how to configure to use SDW in CCS.

Seeing this document,
www.ti.com/.../slau597b.pdf
P40 "5 FAQ"
if you select XDS110 in Target Configuration, you can set SWD Mode.

but we want to use MSP-FET for SWD.

Could you show me how to configure to use SDW in CCS ?
And what signals should be pulled out from his MSP432(customboard) for MSP-FET SWD ?

Regards,
Takeshi Matsuzaki.

  • Any reply ?

    sorry for some typos,
    CCSv6.3 --> CCSv6.1.3
    SDW --> SWD

  • Takeshi,

    I've gotten some clarification here on how to use MSP-FET with MSP432 in SWD mode. In CCS, if you use the MSP-FET, it will automatically detect SWD mode if you have the right connections. There is no option to directly force the MSP-FET to do this. This auto-detection is very similar to how the MSP-FET detects SBW connections on MSP430s. In fact, if you look at the target configuration for MSP432, you will see an option to change JTAG/SBW speed. This is in error and should read JTAG/SWD speed. This is a holdover from the MSP430 tools. Your feedback has been given to the CCS team to get this changed.

    For your HW connections, you only need 4 wires to do this. VCC, GND, TMS/SWDIO, and TCK/SWTCK. This is not apparent either and feedback will be given to the MSP Debugger app note to include this information.
  • Hi Jace, thank you for honest answer.
    I feel we should wait until enough infomation is written in app note or something whether we could actualy do it or not.

    Anway, thanks!

  • Hello Takeshi,

    Waiting for an update to the app note will take time and could delay your projects. Please note, the above mentioned solution works in the most recent versions of IAR and CCS (IAR 7.7, CCSv6.1.3) A colleague and I tested this ourselves on separate machines to make sure. This was the intended path for the MSP432 to be programmed via SWD on MSP-FET. It was just not documented well by the originator of the MSP debuggers app note for the MSP432 was not fully released when the app note was made. If you have further questions, please let me know.
  • OK, we'll go ahead believing your comment.
    if there is problem with SWD on MSP-FET, let me ask.

    Regards,
    Takeshi Matsuzaki
