CCS/MSP-EXP430G2: First time initialization steps of emulator?

Part Number: MSP-EXP430G2

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I am currently working on a board that implements the same circuitry as found on the MSP-EXP430G2 launchpad. I just got the board from the fab and am having trouble communicating with the emulator. This is the first time this board has been used. The error message "No USB FET found" appears when I try to run the debugger in CCS and on some occasions, the computer says it cannot recognize the latest USB device. I was wondering if there were any first time steps that I need to take in order to rectify this problem. Do we need to flash the emulator? Thanks for your help with this.

Thanks,

Jake Smith

  • Hi Smith,

There shouldn't be any first time steps for the MSP-EXP430G2 luanchpad. You may just need to upload the firmware of the emulator when you start the programming.

For your error message "No USB FET found", it shows may be your luanchpad is not powered or connected properly. Could you please do the below checking:

    1. check the PWR led(LED0) on your launchpad to confirm that the board is powered on. If no, you may need to check the power supply of the launchpad. Maybe the use cable is broken or the USB interface on your PC lost the power. Or the power supply circuit on the launchpad is broken and you should change a new launchpad.

    2. Check your Computer Management -> Ports(COM & LPT) to confirm if there is a port named MSP430 Application UART? If no, you may need to replace a USB interface of the PC or a new USB cable.

    3. If the first two checking items are okay, you may need to connect the jumpers on J3 and try to program the on board G2553 device to check if the emulator works well.

BTW, is the launchpad a new one?

  • Hey Wei,

We are not using a launchpad. Instead, the reference design board I am working on implements the same circuitry and parts as found on the MSP-EXP430G2 but has the components mounted straight on the board. This is the first time using this board after manufacturing. The error message received says "Error Initializing Emulator: No USB FET was found". So my question is, do we need to flash code or upload firmware in order to initialize the emulator upon first use? If so is there a resource that can help me with this?

I have checked to assure that all ICs on the board are getting power. Also, when I plug in an actual launchpad to my computer the launchpad is recognized in the device manager and can be programmed. Thanks for your help with this.

    Thanks,
    Jake Smith
  • Hi Jake,

Sorry for misunderstanding of your question. Sure, it should have the firmware on a new EZ430_Emulator board to talk with PC IED. All of the EZ430_Emulator on Launchpad is pre-programmed.

I can find the EZ430 Emulator Upgrade page(http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/EZ430_Emulator_Upgrade?keyMatch=EZ430%20FIRMWARE&tisearch=Search-EN-Everything  ) with the firmware on the eZ430 emulator. You may need to download the firmware to your board.

Please read the description on the page and you may need to use the Chronos emulator firmware to support the latest devices.

I have no chance to try it on my side. Please let me know if any questions after you try this.

  • Hi Jake,

Have your question been solved? I haven't heard about you for a long time and I will close this thread in our system tracking matrix and you can still post message here when you come back.
  • Hey Wei,

While we weren't able to flash the firmware to the emulator, we were able to find another way to program and communicate with the on-board MSP430. Thank you for your help.

    Thanks,

    Jake Smith

  • Hi Jake,

Sounds good. Please come back to E2E forum if you have any further question.
